Requirements to vote:

  • 18 years old on or by Election Day.

  • US citizen.

  • Resident of Kentucky for 28 days prior to Election Day.

  • Not have claimed the right to vote anywhere outside of Kentucky.

  • Must not be a convicted felon. If you have been convicted of a felony, your civil rights have been restored by executive pardon.

  • Must not have been judged mentally incompetent by a court of law.


How do I register?

  • In the state of Kentucky, you can register to vote online, via mail, or in person.

  • To register online, go to https://elect.ky.gov/registertovote/Pages/default.aspx. If you are registering to vote for the first time, you must provide a photocopy of a valid ID. Acceptable forms include a valid photo ID (driver’s license or passport), a current utility bill, a current bank statement, or another government document containing your residential address.

    • The deadline to register online is 29 days before Election Day. 

  • To register via mail, fill out a voter registration form at https://elect.ky.gov/SiteCollectionDocuments/Register%20to%20Vote/Kentucky%20Voter%20Registration%20Card.pdf and mail it to the State Board of Elections. If you are registering to vote for the first time, you must provide a photocopy of a valid ID. Acceptable forms include a valid photo ID (driver’s license or passport), a current utility bill, a current bank statement, or another government document containing your residential address.

    • The deadline to register via mail is 29 days before Election Day. Your form must be postmarked by the deadline.

  • To register to vote in person, contact or visit your county clerk’s office. You will also have the opportunity to register to vote or update your address at your DMV when you register your car, get a driver’s license, or renew your registration/license.

  • You do not have to declare a party affiliation, but if you would like to vote in the primaries, you can only vote on one ballot.

  • If you have legally changed your name or moved to a new address, you must notify your town or city clerk immediately so that they can update your file. You can also update your registration at https://vrsws.sos.ky.gov/ovrweb/


Can I pre-register?

  • Kentucky does not have any specific policy listed on pre-registration; you should contact your local county clerk’s office for more information.
